Tony Rushmer
TONY Rushmer enjoyed a successful journalistic career both as a freelance and a staff writer before establishing his own business at the end of 2004. He quickly built up a host of clients, notably in horseracing before linking up with Newmarket Racecourses, the home of racing.
A BA Hon graduate in Humanities, his first major breakthrough came with BBC Radio Cambridgeshire before he went to work for MATCH football magazine. A stint in London with leading sports journalism agency Hayters Teamwork followed and then Tony was hired as commissioning editor by Total Sport. Four years followed as deputy editor of Golf Weekly ahead of launching Rushmer PR. He remains an active journalist and has covered football for the News Of The World for 15 seasons.
He says: “I love the variety of challenges that running my own business offers and increasingly see the benefit for sports businesses to have active PR programmes.
“Gaining independent media coverage of an event or a product - rather than taking out promotional adverts - has, in my mind, so much more credibility.
“Widespread and brand-communicating coverage validates what PR is all about.”
Tony calls on a variety of associates to assist. He is helped on projects by Jackie Jarvis, an aspiring and well-connected racing PR person.
